Research published in the journal Neurology regarding the MIND diet—which merges elements of the Mediterranean and DASH diets—shows a slower rate of cognitive decline and a reduced risk of cognitive impairment.
According to data from the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study, adherence to the MIND diet correlates with preserved cognitive function across diverse populations. According to Scott Kaiser, a board-certified geriatrician and Director of Geriatric Cognitive Health for the Pacific Neuroscience Institute in Santa Monica, California, research has shown that the MIND diet can decrease brain aging by roughly 7.5 years.
"The MIND diet includes two key layers of vegetables and fruits at its broad base — the biggest, most fundamental layer being reserved for green, leafy vegetables because they are that important," Kaiser states, emphasizing the inclusion of nutrient-dense proteins like fish and poultry while limiting red meat intake to no more than three servings weekly.
Demographic Differences in Brain Health
The protective association of brain-healthy diets manifests differently across demographic groups. Data from the REGARDS study, which evaluated 14,145 white and Black adults with a mean age of 64 over an average of 10 years, indicates that adherence to the MIND diet strongly predicts slower cognitive decline in both cohorts, with particularly prominent associations observed among Black participants.

Furthermore, gender differences emerge in longitudinal cognitive studies. When evaluating dietary patterns and cognitive trajectories, scientists note that protection against cognitive impairment is more pronounced among women, although a slower rate of decline was also seen in men, even if the correlation remained stronger for women.
