Star Wars novels and upcoming screen projects are expanding the franchise timeline, led by the September release of Rebecca Roanhorse’s new book Edge of the Abyss and a slate of upcoming Disney+ series. The publishing push offers a direct literary prequel to the political thriller tone of the streaming series Andor, while Lucasfilm schedules new animated and live-action stories through 2027.
Edge of the Abyss Expands Reign of the Empire Trilogy
Published on September 15, Edge of the Abyss marks the second installment in the Reign of the Empire trilogy, according to reports compiled by platforms including @sw_holocron on Twitter and user discussions on Reddit. Written by Rebecca Roanhorse—known for her work on the television series A Murder at the End of the World and the 2019 Star Wars novel Resistance Reborn—the 336-page book centers on Senator Bail Organa, Rebel Alliance co-founder Mon Mothma, and resistance fighter Saw Gerrera.
The first volume in the trilogy, The Mask of Fear, was written by Alexander Freed. The third and final part of the trilogy is scheduled for release in the summer of 2027. The English edition retails for approximately 30 euros on Amazon.de and local bookstores, while the digital eBook variant costs roughly 15 euros. An audiobook version narrated by actress January LaVoy was released in parallel with the print edition.
Upcoming Star Wars Series and Film Shifts
In the broader visual media landscape, Lucasfilm continues to adjust its release calendar for Disney+ and theatrical distribution. Following the cinematic release of The Mandalorian & Grogu, planned television slates have seen adjustments, with a fourth season of The Mandalorian shelved despite completed scripts.
However, new streaming projects remain on track. The animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord premiered on Disney+ on April 6, 2026, featuring Sam Witwer returning to voice Darth Maul. Additionally, the spin-off series Star Wars: Visions – The Ninth Jedi debuted on August 5, 2026, concluding the narrative arc of the force-sensitive character Kara. Meanwhile, production on the second season of Ahsoka is underway, with a scheduled Disney+ debut of January 20, 2027, continuing the live-action stories featuring Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano, Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine, and Lars Mikkelsen as Thrawn.
