At approximately 1:41 p.m., the Carson City Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call from an individual claiming to be distraught and entering Carson High School to kill students, according to a press release issued by the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. Dispatchers heard sounds resembling gunshots in the background of the call, creating immediate confusion over whether the threat targeted Carson High School or nearby Sierra Lutheran High School in Douglas County.
According to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, School Resource Officers assigned to Carson High School determined early in the response that no active shooting was taking place. However, the campus remained locked down while deputies and assisting agencies conducted a thorough sweep of the buildings and perimeter grounds.
Carson City Sheriff’s Undersheriff Jim Primka noted during the active phase of the incident that the event closely mirrored swatting, a malicious prank phone call designed to provoke a massive law enforcement deployment to a specific location. Traffic around the campus was blocked, and the Nevada Highway Patrol responded to assist local deputies.
Impact on Neighboring Schools and Transportation
Sierra Lutheran High School was also placed on lockdown while Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies investigated the campus, according to Undersheriff Primka. Officials quickly confirmed that Sierra Lutheran was secure and that no emergency existed at that location.
The Carson City School District maintained standard afternoon bus transportation schedules for middle and elementary schools while the high school lockdown remained active. According to district schedules, buses returned to Carson High School at approximately 3:45 p.m. to transport students following the all-clear.
By 3:00 p.m., the lockdown at Carson High School was lifted, and students exited the campus under the escort of law enforcement officers stationed on scene. Law enforcement confirmed that no threats or injuries were located at either school following exhaustive campus searches.
