Rescuers in the eastern Java Sea are facing severe currents, high water pressure, and complex hull designs as they attempt to reach 129 missing people following the capsizing of the ferry KM Virgo Transport 8, according to Indonesian officials. The accident, which occurred five days ago in adverse weather conditions, left six people dead and 108 rescued on the day of the disaster, a toll that has remained unchanged.
Search Operations Hampered by Severe Weather and Strong Currents
The 4,277-ton ship capsized approximately 800 kilometers east-northeast of Jakarta while operating a 20-hour route from Surabaya in East Java province to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan. Arianto Ardi, head of operations for the national rescue agency’s Banjarmasin office, stated that about 60 divers from the Indonesian Navy and the rescue agency have been unable to penetrate the submerged wreck. Overall, 1,100 personnel are working 12-hour shifts deployed across 17 ships, five helicopters, and other aircraft.
Currents at the accident site initially reached nearly 7 knots, exceeding the 1.5-knot safety threshold for diving operations, according to the rescue agency. Yudhi Bramantyo Nur Sasongko, head of operations at the national rescue agency, reported that currents later subsided to between 1.8 and 2 knots. This reduction enabled navy divers to approach the vessel on Thursday during an operational window of roughly eight hours in the water. Operations have also contended with winds and waves reaching heights of up to 2.5 meters near the site.
Vessel Design and Salvage Operations Complicate Rescue Access
Officials confirmed that the ship drifted about 1.8 nautical miles after the accident and now rests on the seabed at a depth of 40 to 50 meters in the Java Sea. Arianto Ardi explained that the 119-meter roll-on/roll-off vessel features an enclosed design built to carry vehicles and passengers between islands. Unlike traditional passenger ships featuring rows of windows from the second deck upward, roll-on/roll-off vessels typically possess high hulls on both sides, which restricted evacuation efforts and now impede diver entry.

Adding to the operational challenges, PT Virgo Karya Shipping, the company that owns the vessel, initiated an effort to right the ship on Friday as part of a legally mandated salvage operation while the active rescue mission continues. Marcellus Jayawibawa, a maritime expert with the alumni association of Indonesia’s Resilience Agency, noted that accessing the hull represents only the initial barrier. Divers must navigate flooded, unfamiliar compartments with near-zero visibility, facing potential pressure surges from trapped air pockets if watertight cabins are breached.
