South Korean actress Son Ye-jin revealed that a memorable emotional reunion scene in her hit drama Crash Landing on You was unscripted and driven entirely by her own creative instincts. Son discussed the behind-the-scenes creation of the series during a promotional appearance alongside fellow actors Ji Chang-wook and Nana.
Unscripted Reunion in Crash Landing on You
According to Son Ye-jin, the initial script for Crash Landing on You did not feature the moment where her character, Yoon Se-ri, runs and embraces Ri Jeong-hyok, played by Hyun Bin. At the time of filming, both actors were still receiving scripts sequentially and had not yet mapped out how their characters’ romantic relationship would fully unfold. Son stated that the initial stage direction simply required Yoon Se-ri and Ri Jeong-hyok to sit side by side, hold hands, and stand up together after removing their paragliding equipment. Feeling that the original staging lacked emotional punch, Son proposed changing the blocking so her character would run directly into Hyun Bin’s arms. The actress noted in her Netflix appearance that playing the emotional beats without knowing the ultimate trajectory of the romance felt daunting initially, but making the spontaneous choice to embrace Hyun Bin was essential to creating one of the series’ defining romantic payoffs.
From On-Screen Romance to Real-Life Marriage
Following the conclusion of the series, the co-stars confirmed they began dating in 2021. The couple married in a private ceremony in Seoul in March 2022 and welcomed their first child later that same year. Despite intense global interest, the couple maintains strict privacy regarding their family life, rarely sharing details about their son in public forums. While Crash Landing on You remains one of Son’s most internationally recognized projects, the actress’s extensive filmography also includes acclaimed romantic dramas such as The Classic, A Moment to Remember, Something in the Rain, and Thirty-Nine.
