Indonesian Navy Acquires First Aircraft Carrier: KRI Sriwijaya Arrives in Jakarta

The Indonesian Navy is preparing a total of 400 personnel to crew the KRI Sriwijaya following the handover of the former Italian aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi, according to announcements made by prospective commander Navy Colonel (P) Fuad Hasan in North Jakarta. The vessel arrived at Tanjung Priok Port, marking a significant addition to the nation’s naval fleet operations.

Personnel Deployment and Training Structure

According to statements from Navy Colonel (P) Fuad Hasan at Tanjung Priok Port, the 400-member crew comprises two distinct deployment groups. One hundred personnel are already stationed aboard the vessel, while an additional 300 personnel have completed phased training at the Koarmada I Training Command in Jakarta, as reported by ANTARA News. Following the official handover process, these 300 newly trained sailors will integrate with the initial group currently undergoing ship operation education.

Voyage and Operational Experience

The initial 100 Indonesian Navy personnel gained direct operational experience by serving alongside approximately 300 Italian Navy personnel during the ship’s voyage from Italy to Indonesia. This transit served as a practical learning process for the Indonesian crew in operating the vessel. The Giuseppe Garibaldi arrived at Pier 107 of Tanjung Priok Port flying the Italian flag and under the command of Captain Marco Guerriero, as documented by ANTARA Foto and local reporting.
