TSA Carry-On Regulations and the 3.4-Ounce Rule
Under current Transportation Security Administration guidelines, any gel or liquid substance brought through airport security must comply with the 3.4-ounce (100-milliliter) rule. According to agency standards, materials exhibiting a flowing character fall into the same category as traditional liquids and gels.
Recent Airport Incidents and Passenger Options
Travelers attempting to clear security checkpoints with large novelty items have encountered strict enforcement actions. In June, traveler Celine Trung experienced delays at Charleston International Airport when her nine-year-old daughter Kathy attempted to travel with a large, butter-shaped squishy toy intended for a flight to Puerto Rico. According to reporting by Yahoo Life, airport staff determined the item’s contents violated carry-on limits, forcing the family to exit the security checkpoint and mail the toy home before completing their boarding procedures.
In a separate incident in June, author E.K. McCoy was stopped at Melbourne Orlando International Airport in Florida while carrying a $250 NeeDoh squishy toy. According to the reported accounts, security personnel offered a choice between surrendering the item, checking the bag containing it, or paying a $75 fee to process the luggage as checked baggage.
Updated Guidance and Security Discretion
The Transportation Security Administration issued updated guidance in August addressing gel-containing toys. Under these directives, toys containing gel or liquid estimated at 3.4 ounces or less are permitted in carry-on luggage if placed inside a standard 1-quart clear, resealable bag alongside other compliant products. Items exceeding the 3.4-ounce limit must be packed in checked luggage.
Despite the updated parameters, final determinations remain at the discretion of individual security officers at checkpoint stations. Many commercial squishy products feature packaging that lists only total weight rather than the precise volume of internal gel, complicating assessments for both travelers and screening staff.
