iPhone 18 Pro Max Adds ‘Prepare to Ship’ Mode for Battery Regulations

The iPhone 18 Pro Max requires users to activate a new “Prepare to Ship” battery drain feature in iOS settings before sending the device through postal services or commercial carriers, according to official Apple Support documentation. Because the single-cell battery exceeds 20 watt-hours (Wh), shipping requirements in most countries and regions necessitate a firmware-level power reduction during transit.

Why the iPhone 18 Pro Max Requires Shipping Preparation

Shipping requirements impose thresholds on single-cell batteries over 20 watt-hours, according to technical details outlined by Apple Support. The iPhone 18 Pro Max surpasses this 20 Wh threshold to deliver extended battery life. To comply with these requirements, Apple implemented a battery-firmware solution that restricts capacity below 20 Wh during factory production and transit. The initial factory limit automatically lifts the moment a customer activates the device.

How to Use the Prepare to Ship Feature

When an activated iPhone 18 Pro Max must be shipped for a repair, trade-in, return, or as a gift, users must manually initiate the discharge sequence. According to instructions published by Apple Support, users should disconnect any active charging cables to accelerate the process, navigate to Settings, select General, choose Transfer or Reset iPhone, and tap Prepare to Ship. The operating system prompts the user to select the destination category—such as Repair, Trade-in, Return, or Other for gifts or sales—before discharging the internal cell and capping the charge level.

Shipping Restrictions and Waiting Periods

During the automated discharge process, Apple warns that the device may become warmer than usual as power drains to meet the required threshold. According to official support guidelines, if a user selects a return, trade-in, or repair path tied to Apple, a carrier, or an iPhone reseller, the firmware locks the maximum charge limit at 80 percent for 14 days. Once the discharge finishes successfully, the settings menu displays a confirmed “Ready to Ship” status, allowing the device to meet shipping requirements.
