Trump Secures Permanent US Military Basing Rights in Greenland

President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the United States has reached a sweeping agreement with Denmark and Greenland to secure permanent control over the Arctic territory’s security and military basing rights. According to a joint statement released by Denmark’s Foreign Ministry, the governments of Greenland, Denmark, and the United States plan to formally sign the pact next week during the United Nations General Assembly.

The agreement is designed to strengthen security across the Arctic and North Atlantic regions, according to the Danish Prime Minister’s Office. President Trump detailed the arrangement late Friday in a post on Truth Social, stating that the accord guarantees the United States the permanent ability to maintain a military presence and defend both Greenland and the American mainland.

“At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Strategic Control and Adversary Restrictions

Under the terms of the upcoming agreement, no U.S. adversary will be permitted to establish military bases, maintain a military presence, or execute sensitive investments in Greenland without explicit written approval from the United States, according to statements from President Trump. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the deal a historic win for American national security, noting that Greenland will permanently remain part of North America’s strategic defense area.

The pact specifies that the United States will immediately begin the process of developing a large military presence in designated areas of Greenland, working in cooperation with the people of Greenland for its construction and development. The arrangement comes after more than a century of American presidents recognizing the unique geographical and strategic importance of the Danish territory, the 12th-largest country in the world.

Sovereignty and Parliamentary Approval

While the agreement grants the United States permanent security and basing rights, officials from Denmark and Greenland have emphasized that the deal does not constitute a transfer of territorial sovereignty. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that the pact benefits NATO and Europe while strictly respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination.

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen echoed those sentiments, asserting that the agreement strengthens security for Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, the United States, and the broader Western Alliance while actively recognizing Greenland’s distinct interests in international cooperation. Earlier this year, Nielsen maintained that the Arctic territory is not for sale and does not want to be owned by the United States, framing the current arrangement strictly as a security agreement.

The agreement will formally enter into force only after completing the necessary national parliamentary procedures, according to the Danish Prime Minister’s Office.
