Nigel Farage announced record-breaking donations totaling £72million from cryptocurrency billionaires Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne, according to reporting by the Mail on Sunday. The massive financial injection aims to professionalize the party and prepare it to contest a general election.
Reform UK Secures £72million From Crypto Donors
According to the Mail on Sunday, Reform UK received two separate £36million donations. The first contribution came from Ben Delo, co-founder of the digital currency trading platform BitMEX and recognized as Britain’s first Bitcoin millionaire. Thailand-based tech investor Christopher Harborne matched the sum shortly after.
Nigel Farage described the funds in the Mail on Sunday as an “investment in democratic renewal,” stating the money will bypass potential Labour Party donation caps and accelerate the party’s infrastructure development. Prior to these contributions, the largest single donation to a UK political party was a £10million bequest to the Tories, while Harborne previously donated £9million to Reform UK.
Party Professionalization and Election Strategy
Farage stated that the £72million war chest will fund campaign managers in target constituencies and recruit policy experts, according to the Mail on Sunday. Party sources also indicated plans to establish an “attack unit” targeting political rivals as Westminster speculates about an early general election.
Despite the influx of cash, election experts emphasize that financial backing alone does not guarantee electoral success. Sir John Curtice, professor of politics at the University of Strathclyde, told the Mail on Sunday that while the funding places Reform UK in a stronger position to fight the next election, local activists and research cannot win votes without a persuasive message.
Financial Scrutiny and Investigations
The party’s finances face concurrent scrutiny. According to the Mail on Sunday, Christopher Harborne is currently the subject of an investigation by the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner regarding whether a personal £5million gift to Farage required formal declaration. Additionally, the Metropolitan Police launched a criminal inquiry into separate allegations that senior party figures breached legal donation rules during an undercover sting.
Harborne maintained that his contributions carry no expectation of policy influence or honors, distinguishing his donations from historical practices associated with other mainstream political parties.
