Chilean Navy Tanker “Almirante Montt” Celebrates National Day in San Diego

During a deployment to the United States, the crew of the Chilean Navy oiler Almirante Montt commemorated Chile’s national anniversary on September 18 with an onboard ceremony in San Diego, California. The event gathered the ship’s personnel to mark the holiday more than 4,700 nautical miles away from home, according to the Chilean Navy.

Command Perspective on International Operations

Addressing the crew during the ceremony, Unit Commander Captain José Ignacio Pájaro emphasized the significance of representing the nation abroad. According to Captain Pájaro, operating far from domestic waters carries the responsibility of displaying the Chilean flag in foreign latitudes and demonstrating a sovereign nation’s commitment to international cooperation.

Captain Pájaro stated that this September 18 finds them deployed in San Diego, operating in other seas and far from their families, but noted that despite the distance, Chile is with them because a ship of the Chilean Navy abroad is a piece of their land, and they have the responsibility to show their flag in other latitudes, as reported by the Chilean Navy.

Captain Pájaro noted that the presence of the naval pavilion in foreign waters reflects a sovereign state’s willingness to work alongside other nations. He encouraged the crew to maintain the same pride they would feel seeing the flag in Valparaíso or Talcahuano.

Traditional Celebrations and Crew Camaraderie

Following the official address, the itinerary continued with cultural displays designed to maintain ties to home. The commemoration featured a traditional cueca dance performance and a showcase of Chilean traditions.
