China’s industrial expansion has driven the dramatic decline in photovoltaic hardware costs over the past two decades. Wood Mackenzie estimates Chinese solar manufacturing capacity at roughly 1.36 terawatts. By the end of 2025, installed small-scale solar capacity worldwide reached nearly 1.2 terawatts, according to the Energy Institute’s Statistical Review of World Energy. That global total is about three times the size of the global nuclear fleet, according to data cited by The Financial Times. These low price points have transformed on-site generation from a niche alternative into a practical baseline energy source in regions facing high electricity tariffs or frequent grid instability.

Manufacturing Growth and the Price Collapse

Industrial Adoption in Pakistan and Africa

Commercial and industrial users have led adoption rates because their peak operating hours align directly with daylight generation windows. In Pakistan, Bestway Cement’s plant in Chakwal now draws more than a quarter of its power from solar installations, according to MarketScale and The Financial Times. The facility operates 26 megawatts of installed capacity and plans to add another 6.34 megawatts by the end of the year. “It’s the only way we can compete,” Abdul Waheed, the general manager of the plant, told The Financial Times, noting that rival manufacturers have adopted similar infrastructure. Across the African continent, Ember expects the addition of about 17 gigawatts of solar capacity this year, concentrated primarily in smaller commercial and factory installations. Retailer Shoprite has equipped buildings and transport fleets with solar arrays in South Africa and Namibia since 2015, reaching roughly 43 megawatts of peak capacity while exploring battery storage integrations.

Residential Growth in Asia

Household adoption is accelerating rapidly where utility power remains expensive. In the Philippines, rooftop solar capacity nearly doubled in the 12 months leading up to April, according to Ember estimates. Data from electricity distributor Meralco indicates that rooftop systems generated 372 gigawatt-hours during the first six months of the year, while Ember calculates that residential setups can recover their initial capital costs in just over three years. India is expanding residential capacity via a national subsidy program launched in February 2024. Tata Power chief executive Praveer Sinha stated that the initiative has installed panels on more than 5 million homes, adding approximately 500,000 households monthly.

Utility Revenue Pressures and Grid Strain

The proliferation of self-generation is disrupting traditional utility business models by eroding revenues from high-paying customer segments. In Karachi, Pakistan, power supplier K-Electric reports that solar adoption has concentrated heavily in affluent areas like the Defence Housing Authority. Syed Muhammad Taha, the utility’s chief executive, described the technology as “a curse and a blessing,” noting that customers installing panels are among the company’s most reliable revenue generators while buying significantly less grid electricity. K-Electric noted that in lower-income neighborhoods such as Lyari, it loses between Rs30 and Rs40 ($0.31 to $0.42) for every Rs100 ($1.04) spent supplying power. Azem Baloch, a mechanic renting a flat in Lyari, said that utility costs consume more than half of his income. In South Africa, state utility Eskom estimates that rooftop solar and batteries accounted for roughly 7% of its 11.7 terawatt-hour decline in electricity sales for the year ending in March, reducing capital available for power plants and network maintenance as wealthier users reduce daytime grid purchases.
