New York City health officials report that human cases of the West Nile virus have surpassed last year’s total, driven by a surge in infected mosquitoes across all five boroughs, according to the New York City Department of Health. At least 30 people have contracted the mosquito-borne illness since the season’s first case was confirmed in early August 2026, marking a sharp increase from the 18 cases recorded during the entirety of 2025.
Geographic Distribution Across the Five Boroughs
Infection data released by the city’s health department shows that all five boroughs have detected mosquitoes carrying the pathogen, with Brooklyn leading the city at 11 confirmed human cases. Queens and Staten Island follow with seven cases each, while the Bronx has reported three cases and Manhattan two. Of the 30 total patients diagnosed in the city, 24 individuals developed the severe neuroinvasive form of the disease, which manifests as encephalitis, meningitis, or acute flaccid paralysis. The remaining six cases presented as West Nile fever, which involves no central nervous system involvement.
Record-Breaking Mosquito Pools and Weather Factors
The city’s mosquito surveillance teams trapped more than 1,700 mosquito pools that tested positive for the virus in 2026, a significant jump compared to the roughly 1,300 positive pools recorded the previous year. Salluy Slavinski, director of the Zoonotic and Vector-Borne Disease Unit at the city’s health department, stated in the New York Post that the volume of positive pools represents a record high for the municipality.
According to Slavinski, higher summer temperatures accelerated the mosquito life cycle and viral replication rates within the insects, shortening the window required for an infected mosquito to transmit the virus. Increased rainfall and humidity created standing water across the urban environment, allowing mosquito populations to multiply rapidly and remain active later into the year.
Surveillance and Municipal Control Operations
To combat the spread, the city’s health department deploys larvicides in standing water and conducts targeted truck-mounted pesticide spraying in high-risk zones throughout Queens, Staten Island, Brooklyn, and Manhattan, including areas near Central Park and the Upper West Side. According to agency data, these targeted operations reduce adult mosquito populations by roughly 70 percent and decrease virus-positive insect pools by more than 85 percent. City officials continue to monitor traps and urge residents to report persistent standing water through the 311 system.

Clinical Impact and Testing Limitations
While the virus has circulated in New York local mosquito populations annually since 1999, health authorities note that the vast majority of human infections remain asymptomatic or cause mild illness such as fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and vomiting. Slavinski explained that because young and healthy individuals often experience mild or no symptoms, they typically do not seek medical care or undergo testing. Consequently, the confirmed case count captures primarily severe neuroinvasive patients who require hospitalization, meaning total community infections are likely higher than official figures indicate.
