Travelers seeking historic sites and natural scenery in North Gyeongsang Province during the autumn season can explore several notable destinations in Andong. Situated along the water paths of the Nakdong River, Andong preserves centuries of traditional Korean heritage, Neo-Confucian scholarship, and environmental restoration projects.

Dosan Seowon Preserves Neo-Confucian Heritage

Located in Tosang-myeon, Dosan Seowon is a historic Confucian academy established in 1561 by the scholar Yi Hwang, widely known by his pen name Toegye. According to cultural heritage records, the scholar personally designed Dosan Seodang to teach his disciples, while adjacent buildings such as Nongunjeongsa served as quarters for students. Following his passing, the site was expanded into a formal academy and shrine. In 1575, the academy received a royal signboard calligraphed by the renowned calligrapher Han Seok-bong, cementing its status as a leading center of Yeongnam scholarship. Visitors walking the surrounding pathways encounter old willow trees and Sisadan, a memorial pavilion. The grounds feature traditional Korean architecture integrated with the natural landscape along the river.

Andong Millennium Forest Offers Eco-Friendly Walking Paths

Situated in Galjeon-myeon, the Andong Millennium Forest serves as an urban ecological space located directly opposite the Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Government office. According to environmental management reports, the 숲 (forest) is registered under the forestry sector greenhouse gas emissions trading scheme, absorbing an estimated 65 tons of carbon dioxide annually. The area features a 1-kilometer barefoot walking path composed of yellow mud balls, white clay balls, and magnetite stones designed to stimulate circulation. At the trail’s conclusion, visitors have access to foot-massage facilities and washing stations surrounded by pine tree shade.

Andong Folk Village Displays Submerged Heritage Architecture

Positioned near Andong Dam in Seonggok-dong, the Andong Folk Village functions as an open-air museum preserving traditional straw-roofed houses relocated from regions submerged during the dam’s construction. The entrance features traditional village guardians, alongside a monument inscribed with the poem “The Wilderness” by the Andong-born resistance poet Lee Yuksa. Adjacent to the Andong Folk Museum and Andong Lake, the village exhibits historical living structures and regional folklore from the Nakdong River basin.
