The incident unfolded during the juvenile maiden special weight race featuring a 10-horse field. According to track announcer Travis Stone and official Equibase chart data, the accident began near the far turn when the second-place 2-year-old mount Lutkenhaus, ridden by Cristian Torres, fell. The chain-reaction spill unseated multiple riders and blocked the track.

The affected horses and riders included Shacklebolt and Walter Rodriguez, Steve Wood and Martin Garcia, and Ritornello and Francisco Arrieta, all of whom fell or lost their riders. Equibase charts also showed that Industrious, mounted by Keith Asmussen, and Midnight Rumble, ridden by Axel Concepcion, fell over the trailing obstacles.

Hospitalizations and Equine Status Following the Churchill Downs Incident

Following the crash, medical personnel transported jockeys Cristian Torres, Walter Rodriguez, and Martin Garcia to UofL Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, as reported by the Paulick Report. Cody Autrey, agent for Cristian Torres, stated that the rider complained of back pain, though initial assessments did not indicate severe injuries. Track reports noted that Francisco Arrieta initially took off his mount in the third race but was expected to return later in the card, while Keith Asmussen opted to take off his remaining mounts. Axel Concepcion successfully returned to the saddle by the third race.

On the equine side, the Equibase chart confirmed that three horses—Lutkenhaus, Shacklebolt, and Industrious—were loaded onto equine ambulances and vanned off the track. Following a roughly 30-minute delay, race officials officially declared the event a no-contest.
