Richie Palacios Hits Walk-Off Single to Lead Rays Over Red Sox

The win lowered the American League East Rays’ magic number to clinch the division title to five games, capping a late-game rally that relied on a pair of fortuitous bounces.

Late-Inning Rallies and Division Stakes

The postseason-bound Rays have won seven of their last eight games and hold an MLB-best 25-14 record in one-run games, according to AP reporting. Prior to the ninth-inning heroics, the team struggled offensively, going 0 for 17 with runners in scoring position over the first two games of the series.

The decisive ninth inning began when Junior Caminero’s foul popup bounced off the Tropicana Field catwalk, eluding third baseman Caleb Durbin. Caminero capitalized on the reprieve by lining the next pitch from Garrett Whitlock (7-2) into left field. After a single by Chandler Simpson, a passed ball by catcher Connor Wong moved Caminero to third base ahead of Palacios’ game-winning hit.

Red Sox Missed Opportunities and Pitching Duels

The Red Sox, who are bidding to clinch a wild-card berth, squandered a crucial scoring chance in the top of the ninth inning against Rays closer Bryan Baker (4-2). Caleb Durbin hit a double and Jarren Duran followed with a triple in the tie game. However, catcher Nick Fortes threw out Durbin trying to steal third base, and Caminero made a defensive stop at third to retire Isiah Kiner-Falefa, stranding Duran.

Boston’s missed opportunities overshadowed a performance by starting pitcher Brayan Bello, who matched a career high with 11 strikeouts. Bello pitched eight innings, surrendering five hits, one run, and zero walks. Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman was unavailable due to lat tightness.

The Red Sox initially took a 1-0 lead in the third inning behind consecutive doubles from Durbin and Roman Anthony. Tampa Bay answered in the fourth when Jonathan Aranda hit an opposite-field solo home run on the first pitch from Bello. Trevor Story also contributed for Boston, extending his hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the sixth.

Upcoming Series Finale

The series concludes on Sunday at Tropicana Field. Right-handed pitcher Griffin Jax (7-10, 3.80 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Tampa Bay Rays, according to the Associated Press. The Boston Red Sox had not announced a starting pitcher prior to Sunday’s game.
