Actor Michelle Keegan has overhauled her fitness routine to focus on progressive weight training, working alongside personal trainer Danny-Lee Finch to build strength and physical definition following the birth of her child, according to reporting by Women’s Health.
The Progressive Weight Training Routine
According to coach Danny-Lee Finch, speaking to Women’s Health, the 39-year-old actor introduced progressive weight training 18 months after giving birth to her baby, Palma. Progressive weight training involves continuously challenging the body compared to previous sessions by lifting heavier loads or performing additional repetitions. Finch stated that the method has made Keegan noticeably leaner and significantly stronger, while increasing muscle visibility through higher muscle mass and lower body fat. The workouts take place just two to three times per week for an hour per session.
Managing Parenthood and Workout Splits
To balance fitness goals with the demands of parenthood, Keegan and her husband, Mark Wright, take turns caring for baby Palma rather than training together, according to Finch’s interview with Women’s Health. To maximize results within their hourly sessions, Finch utilizes workout splits, dedicating specific days to targeted muscle groups such as isolating the upper body or legs. Each session begins with heavier weights to stimulate strength and muscle growth when energy levels are highest. This is followed by reduced loads and drop sets—lifting a heavy weight to failure before immediately dropping down to a lighter weight without resting—to fully fatigue the muscles. Sessions conclude with four rounds of two-minute boxing pad drills to enhance fitness and coordination. Outside of personal training, Keegan regularly attends reformer Pilates to support core strength and mobility.
