Hideo Kojima’s Physint: Why PlayStation Dropped the Game and Xbox Picked It Up

Game director Hideo Kojima has addressed reports surrounding the cancellation of his upcoming espionage project Physint by PlayStation, maintaining that the game remains in active development with Microsoft. According to an interview with The Washington Post, Kojima Productions learned that Sony was dropping financial backing for the title during a mid-June Zoom meeting where PlayStation representatives announced the decision without providing a reason.

The abrupt shift ended a two-year partnership in which Sony originally agreed to fund the action-espionage game. Following the cancellation, Kojima Productions spent roughly three months seeking a new publishing partner before securing an agreement with Microsoft, which is already working on the studio’s horror project OD and has taken over the publication of the game. Despite the change in backers, studio president Shinji Hirano and Kojima confirmed to The Washington Post that no staff layoffs occurred, as personnel were temporarily reassigned to OD while a core team maintained early work on Physint.

Kojima Productions Responds to Financial Speculation

Bloomberg reported that the split between PlayStation and Kojima Productions stemmed from disagreements over budget, delivery schedules, profitability concerns, and a lack of total platform exclusivity, alongside commercial performance figures for Death Stranding that missed internal targets. In response, Kojima Productions issued a public statement addressing what it termed “speculations” circulating on the internet.

“We want to assure everyone that the studio is in a strong and profitable position,” the studio stated, adding that Physint continues its development with Xbox and that its relationship with PlayStation has not deteriorated despite the funding withdrawal. In his interview with The Washington Post, Kojima expressed lingering bewilderment over Sony’s choice, noting that former PlayStation president Jim Ryan had initially shown keen interest in the concept, which Kojima called the title with the highest sales potential he could create.

Development Status and the Return to the Espionage Genre

Development on Physint remains in early stages, though Kojima confirmed that storyboards and narrative concepts are well advanced. The studio has begun creating initial 3D models and scanning actors, though a final graphics engine has not yet been selected while technical evaluations continue.

The project marks Kojima’s return to the genre that popularized him with the Metal Gear Solid franchise, which he has not worked on since 2015. According to The Washington Post, Kojima did not plan to revisit the genre until a severe illness in 2020 prompted him to reconsider his project lineup and respond to persistent requests from his environment.
