The shooting occurred Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Anderson Square and Research Boulevard, drawing heavy police response, on-scene protests, and immediate demands for transparency from local and federal lawmakers.
Shooting and Medical Response Details
Emergency medical crews were dispatched to the 8000 block of Anderson Square at approximately 12:56 p.m. on Sunday, according to Austin-Travis County EMS Chief Rob Luckritz. Paramedics arrived within three and a half minutes to find an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso. Crews transported the patient to a local trauma center in serious but stable condition within nine minutes of arrival, Luckritz stated.
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis confirmed that the shooting involved a federal immigration agent. A dark blue Toyota Corolla with passenger-side door damage and visible bullet holes in a broken window remained parked under the overpass at Research Boulevard and West Anderson Lane following the incident. Davis noted that preliminary information indicated a brief foot pursuit preceded the gunfire, though federal authorities had not yet provided a full briefing.
Multi-Agency Investigation Structure
State and local law enforcement agencies have established a joint investigative framework to review the shooting. Davis stated that the Austin Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit responded to the scene, while the Texas Rangers will work alongside local police in the inquiry. Homeland Security Investigations also agreed to provide cooperation, according to city officials.
The Travis County District Attorney’s office issued a statement calling for co-equal investigative partnership: “A member of our community was shot by an ICE agent this afternoon. It is critical that all the facts come to light and that an independent investigation be completed. We are requesting that the Austin Police Department and our office, the Travis County District Attorney, be co-equal partners in the investigation.”

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson expressed strong opposition to the incident, questioning whether an investigation led solely by ICE would maintain public credibility. “I am very angry and extremely disappointed that a person was shot on the streets of Austin by ICE,” Watson said during a City Hall news conference, emphasizing that Austin police officers were not involved in the shooting.
U.S. Rep. Greg Casar, D-Austin, criticized the federal presence during a press conference following the shooting, stating that the incident follows weeks of heightened immigration enforcement activity in the city. State Rep. Vikki Goodwin also addressed the incident on social media, asserting that the violence must be addressed.
