Jannik Sinner Reaches 90 Consecutive Weeks as ATP World No. 1

Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner has reached 90 weeks as the world number one in the ATP Rankings, maintaining the top spot since June 10, 2024, according to data reported by Europa Press.

ATP Ranking History and Elite Milestone

Sinner stands as the 11th player in tennis history to maintain the number one ranking for at least 90 weeks since the inception of the ATP computerized rankings in 1973, according to ATP Tour records cited by Europa Press. Out of 29 players who have reached the pinnacle of men’s tennis, only eleven have crossed the 90-week threshold. Novak Djokovic leads the all-time list with 428 weeks, followed by Roger Federer at 310 weeks, Pete Sampras at 286 weeks, Ivan Lendl at 270 weeks, and Jimmy Connors at 268 weeks. Rafael Nadal accumulated 209 weeks at number one, John McEnroe totaled 170 weeks, Bjorn Borg reached 109 weeks, and Andre Agassi recorded 101 weeks.

To contextualize Sinner’s 90-week run, the ATP Tour highlighted that several former world number ones combined—including Patrick Rafter, Carlos Moya, Marcelo Rios, Thomas Muster, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, John Newcombe, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Marat Safin, Boris Becker, Andy Roddick, and Daniil Medvedev—accumulated a total of 87 weeks at the top spot among the eleven of them.

Chase for 100 Weeks and Zverev Pursuit

Sinner’s next major milestone involves reaching 100 weeks as the world number one, a target he will hit on November 30 if he retains his ranking lead. To secure that milestone, the Italian player must fend off his closest challenger, Alexander Zverev. The reigning Roland Garros and US Open champion sits in the second position with (9.690) points, trailing Sinner by 1.810 points, according to the ATP standings.

If Sinner defends his ranking through the end of the year, he will surpass Andre Agassi’s 101-week total on December 14 to become the tenth tenista with more weeks number one.

Return to Competition and Points Defense

Sinner is scheduled to return to the ATP Tour on September 30 at the hard-court China Open in Beijing, marking his first competitive appearance since sustaining a knee injury after winning Wimbledon. The upcoming autumn swing brings a significant points defense challenge for the Italian.

According to ranking calculations, Sinner must defend 3.550 ranking points during the remainder of the season. In contrast, Alexander Zverev faces a lighter defense load of 1.080 points over the same period, setting up a high-stakes battle for the year-end ranking crown.
