Mayo Clinic Health System broke ground on Tuesday, Sept. 22, on a new six-story, 180,000-square-foot building on the Luther Hospital Campus in Eau Claire. The facility expands integrated medical practice space, particularly for surgeries, procedures, and inpatient hospital care, as part of the health system’s broader capital investments.
Building Design and Patient Care Capacity
The new structure connects directly to the Luther Building and Wishart Building on every floor. The first floor features operating and procedure rooms alongside recovery bays. Upper floors offer flexible layouts configurable for 30 hospital rooms, 50 outpatient exam rooms, or a hybrid of both. Architects designed the spaces to integrate digital technologies and artificial intelligence capabilities to support clinical workflows as scientific methods evolve.

Concurrent Campus Expansions in Eau Claire
The new building anchors a broader master development plan underway on the Luther Hospital Campus. Additional infrastructure projects running concurrently include:
- Intensive Care Unit Expansion: A 22,000-square-foot addition increases future ICU capacity to 41 beds for complex cases.
- Emergency Care Center: The Menard Center for Emergency Care is expanding by 10,200 square feet to add 26 treatment bays, with an opening scheduled for February 2027. This unit sits adjacent to trauma operating rooms, the ICU, and procedure rooms for interventional cardiology and radiology.
- Ambulance Garage and Parking: The climate-controlled ambulance garage will double in size to house up to four vehicles. Crews are also constructing more than 450 additional parking spaces with new ramp connections and walkways.
Timeline and Demolition of Legacy Facilities
The groundbreaking event acknowledged the history of the Amalia Building, where generations of clinicians treated patients. Officials will decommission the Amalia Building in early October to clear the footprint for subsequent phases. Construction on the main six-story building is slated to begin in early spring 2027, with project completion targeted for late summer 2029.
