Microsoft Teams meetings now support a green screen feature designed to sharpen virtual background effects around a user’s face, head, ears, and hair. According to Microsoft Support, the tool improves visual separation during video calls and allows participants to hold up physical props without background distortion.
Enabling Green Screen in Teams Meetings
To use the feature, users must position themselves in front of a solid-colored background with proper lighting, according to Microsoft’s documentation. The configuration process requires users to join a meeting, open the pre-join screen, turn on the camera, and navigate to Effects and avatars > More video effects > Green screen settings. Under Devices > Video, users toggle the green screen switch on and use an onscreen color dropper tool to select their backdrop color in the video preview.
According to the Microsoft Tech Community release, users can also adjust these settings mid-meeting by clicking the more icon in the meeting toolbar, selecting Video effects, and accessing the green screen settings under the background section. Once configured, the green screen setting automatically applies to all subsequent meetings until turned off or reconfigured.
Compatibility and System Requirements
The green screen feature is currently available to users enrolled in the Public Preview channel, though other meeting participants do not need to be in the preview program, as specified by Microsoft. The tool is supported on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, and web browsers including Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft Edge.
However, hardware limitations apply to desktop systems. According to Microsoft’s release notes, the feature is supported only on Windows and macOS devices running Intel and AMD chips. Apple Silicon Mac devices using M1 and M2 chips are not supported. Additionally, enabling a green screen automatically disables background blur and Together Mode. The feature remains compatible with presenter modes such as Standout, Side-by-Side, Reporter, PowerPoint Live Standout, and standard JPEG or PNG background replacements.
Best Practices for Background Setup
Microsoft advises that users need a flat, solid-colored screen or a clean background wall free of stains, irregularities, or translucent materials for the tool to work effectively. Objects that are too thin or transparent cannot produce an accurate green screen effect. Users must also ensure they avoid selecting a backdrop color that matches their clothing or physical props.
