Dolly Parton’s estate has filed a lawsuit against the late country music icon’s nephew, Bryan Seaver, alleging that he used violent threats to extort money following her death, according to court documents obtained by Billboard. Filed on Tuesday, Sept. 22, the legal action comes less than a month after Parton passed away on August 25 at the age of 79.
Lawsuit Alleges Extortion and Violent Threats
According to the lawsuit filed by She’s Alive LLC—the company established by Parton to handle her posthumous finances and affairs—Seaver became emboldened following his aunt’s death and attempted to extract funds from her estate. Court papers include screenshots of written messages in which Seaver allegedly made direct threats to staff and legal representation. “I’m a killer,” Seaver allegedly wrote to one of Parton’s attorneys, according to Billboard.
Additional text messages sent to Parton’s longtime manager and head of the estate’s operations, Danny Nozell, included claims that Seaver was an “international arms dealer and mercenary.” The lawsuit states that Seaver wrote, “I’m going to spend the next times I have on earth ratf—king anyone that has ever betrayed my family” and warned, “All I do is warfare. Everyone needs to be worried about what I might do.”
Security Termination and Restraining Order Request
Seaver previously served as Parton’s head of security and publicly announced her death in an Instagram video on August 25. Due to his escalating behavior, Parton’s estate terminated his employment on Wednesday, Sept. 16, according to the court filings.
Despite his firing, the estate maintains that it requires ongoing protection from the judicial system. She’s Alive LLC is seeking a restraining order that would mandate Seaver to remain at least 1,000 feet away from all estate team members. The legal filing emphasizes the severe impact of Seaver’s actions on the workplace environment, noting that staff members have expressed fear for their physical safety, with some choosing to resign rather than return to work.

The legal dispute unfolds as Parton’s estate works to manage her substantial legacy and final arrangements.
