Flyers coach wants Jakub Jiříček to shoot more often

Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Jakub Jiříček enters the ongoing training camp with an offseason directive from the coaching staff to shoot more often. Jiříček spent the majority of the previous season with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the American Hockey League, where he recorded nearly a point per game after being acquired from the Minnesota Wild, who had previously obtained him from the Columbus Blue Jackets. He appeared in a single NHL game with Philadelphia at the end of the regular season.

Follows Offseason Directive

Tocchet Addresses Hesitancy and Injury Risks

Tocchet noted during the current training camp that while the Czech defenseman possesses an exceptional shot, he rarely unleashes it during practice sessions out of concern for injuring teammates. The difficulty of practicing point shots without risking injury prompted Tocchet to remark on the need for safer training equipment.

A Desperate Need for Power-Play Production

The Flyers desperately need improvement on the power play, having finished the previous regular season with a league-worst success rate below 16 percent. Defensive production on the man-advantage was particularly sparse, as no Flyers defenseman scored more than one goal or accumulated a double-digit point total over the course of the season. According to a report by the Morning Call, Jiříček provides a much-needed heavy shot to a blue line where Jamie Drysdale is projected to see significant time on the top power-play unit.

Preseason Competition and Roster Dynamics

In the preseason, Jiříček features on the second power-play unit while competing for a roster spot on the right side of the third defensive pairing. His primary competition comes from several young defensemen, notably Oliver Bonk, the son of former NHL player Radek Bonk. Through the first two preseason games, Jiříček recorded three shots without notching a point.

The Waiver Rule Advantage

Despite a quiet start to the exhibition schedule, Jiříček holds a distinct roster advantage over his main competitors. Unlike Bonk and other young hopefuls who can be reassigned freely, Jiříček would require clearing waivers to be sent to the American Hockey League, leaving him vulnerable to being claimed by another NHL franchise without compensation.
