Tribulus Terrestris and Testosterone: What the 2025 Science Says

The End of a Natural Booster Myth

Tribulus terrestris fails to reliably increase testosterone levels in healthy men, according to a systematic review published in 2025.

Decades of marketing have positioned the Mediterranean and Bulgarian herb as a primary natural booster for male vitality. Yet clinical evaluations show that eight out of ten trials recorded no significant hormonal changes following supplementation.

However, subset analyses indicate potential improvements in erectile function and overall sexual satisfaction. This is particularly true among participants presenting with baseline sexual health concerns.

Scrutinizing the Clinical Trial Data

Researchers evaluated 10 peer-reviewed clinical trials comprising 483 male participants aged 16 to 70 to determine the hormonal impact of Tribulus terrestris.

The reviewed cohort included healthy individuals alongside patients experiencing erectile dysfunction, infertility, and low testosterone.

Out of the 10 studies analyzed in the 2025 review, eight reported no statistically significant alterations in male hormone levels after supplementation. Testosterone concentrations remained consistent with baseline measurements taken prior to the administration of the herbal extract.

Exceptions Among Low-Testosterone Cohorts

Only two studies within the review documented an increase in testosterone. Both positive trials involved participants who presented with low testosterone levels at the outset of the research.

Following a three-month supplementation period, those specific cohorts experienced an increase in testosterone values ranging between 60 and 70 ng/dL.

Authors of the review noted that these two studies were among the methodologically weakest in the dataset, creating significant limitations for clinical interpretation. Consequently, current scientific literature does not support the claim that puncture vine acts as a dependable testosterone-boosting agent for the general population.

Measuring Gains in Sexual Satisfaction

While hormonal changes remained largely absent, findings regarding sexual function and erectile health demonstrated more consistent trends across the literature.

Five trials within the review specifically monitored erectile dysfunction, with three of those studies recording measurable improvements in participants with diagnosed erection difficulties.

Beyond physiological erectile parameters, patient-reported metrics indicated positive shifts in subjective sexual well-being. Participants reported heightened sexual desire, increased enjoyment during intercourse, and greater overall satisfaction with their sexual activity.

Rapid Onset Independent of Hormones

Onset of these reported benefits occurred more rapidly than hormonal shifts typically require.

One trial observed discernible differences between the supplement group and the placebo group after four weeks of continuous use, with performance gaps widening by the conclusion of the monitoring period.

Researchers emphasized that these observations do not position Tribulus terrestris as an equivalent alternative to pharmaceutical treatments for erectile dysfunction.

The reported improvements in sexual function occurred independently of elevated testosterone levels, as documented in trials where participant hormone concentrations remained entirely unchanged throughout the study duration.
