Kenya head coach Benni McCarthy has revealed that persistent work permit issues force him to leave the country immediately following international windows. Appointed in 2025 to lead the Harambee Stars toward the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, the 47-year-old manager has faced persistent public criticism for his frequent absences between national team assignments.
Speaking to journalist Kevin Teya in an interview reported by KickOff, McCarthy explained that the lack of legal documentation prevents him from remaining in Kenya outside active camp periods. Co-hosts Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are currently preparing to stage the 2027 tournament, heightening scrutiny surrounding the national team technical staff.

McCarthy stated that administrative failures by the federation left him vulnerable to immigration scrutiny. The former South Africa international noted that he spent a year and a half requesting proper documentation after officials initially assured him the matter was under control.
But a year and a half later, you get tired of asking. Your words end up falling on deaf ears, and that's where we are with the federation."
Concerns Over Undocumented Status and Public Criticism
Addressing the backlash over his time spent outside East Africa, McCarthy emphasized that his personal background amplifies his caution regarding immigration enforcement. As South Africa’s all-time leading goalscorer, his high profile makes compliance essential.
He noted that the oversight has fortunately avoided major exposure until now, calling it a significant issue that management has largely overlooked.
