GLP-1 Weight-Loss Drugs Cut Deep into Packaged Food Demand

The popularity of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) medications is altering consumer habits—and the shockwaves are hitting heavy industry.

According to HB Fuller CEO Celeste Mastin, the adoption of these weight-loss drugs has led consumers to purchase less packaged food. That dietary shift is creating downstream volume pressures for industrial adhesives manufacturers.

Adhesives Producers Feel the Downstream Pinch

As patients adopt GLP-1 treatments for weight management, food companies that produced consumer packaged goods (CPG) are noticing shifts in purchasing habits.

Celeste Mastin, CEO of US-based adhesives producer HB Fuller, stated during an earnings conference call that consumers are purchasing a lot less packaged food. This behavioral shift directly impacts the company’s Hygiene, Health and Consumable Adhesives (HHC) business, which supplies bonding materials for packaging.

The contraction in volume is not isolated to a single quarter. HB Fuller recorded lower volumes across its HHC business during multiple periods, including January 2025 and January 2026. Chemical industry peers are observing similar market adjustments. An executive at chemical distributor Univar Solutions noted that GLP-1 drugs have caused demand to decline for food ingredients.

Stagnant Household Formation Slows Retail Turnover

Beyond pharmaceutical impacts on diet, demographic shifts are altering industrial adhesive consumption. Mastin pointed to a slower pace of consumers forming new households as a secondary driver behind the slump in packaging demand. Reduced labor mobility means people are not moving as much for jobs, leading to stagnant home purchases and lower retail turnover.

When consumers move less frequently, they purchase fewer products for their homes, fill fewer new cupboards, and do not change out materials in their homes. This lack of mobility has weighed on the HHC business over the past couple of years, affecting the demand for raw materials including tackifying resins, polymers, synthetic rubber, plasticizers, and vinyl acetate monomer.

Raw Material Suppliers Face a Dual Industrial Challenge

Chemical producers dependent on consumer goods face a dual challenge from shifting dietary habits and stagnant housing markets.

Manufacturers supplying raw materials—such as polymers and synthetic rubber—must adapt their production forecasts as packaging requirements evolve. While pharmaceutical innovations reshape consumer appetites, industrial suppliers continue to monitor how long-term demographic trends will influence supply chains.
