Australian boxer Sam Goodman challenges Japan’s Ryosuke Nishida for the interim IBF super bantamweight world title on Sunday, September 27, in Tokyo, with both fighters aiming for a major divisional breakthrough. The bout streams live on Kayo Sports starting at 6pm AEST.
Managerial Ties and Tactical Breakdown
Aussie boxing manager and matchmaker Mike Altamura has worked with Nishida out of Muto Boxing Gym since the Japanese fighter’s second professional bout. Altamura also managed TJ Doheny during the Irishman’s career, including a 2023 loss to Goodman. Altamura notes that Goodman’s in-and-out movement during that fight proved particularly difficult to time.
“I saw Sam at what I felt was his best when he was very fresh, early career, against TJ,” Altamura told Fox Sports Australia. “His in-and-out movement was ultra effective and very hard to time and very hard to catch at that point in his career.”
While Andrew Moloney points to Goodman’s footwork and speed as distinct advantages, Altamura suggests that faster feet do not automatically translate to more effective positioning. He expects Nishida to possess the necessary counters if he remains fully focused.
Strength and the Super Bantamweight Shift
Altamura cautions against underestimating Nishida based strictly on his record of 11 wins, one loss, and two knockouts. The Japanese southpaw has damaged roughly 90 percent of his opponents at some point during their bouts and benefits significantly from moving to super bantamweight.
“He was cutting from like 150 pounds to 118 pounds to make bantamweight,” Altamura said regarding Nishida’s previous weight class struggles. “So the extra four pounds of reprieve suits him considerably better.”
Goodman brings physical strength that extends beyond his mobility, according to Altamura, who describes the Albion Park fighter as a courageous fighter comfortable engaging in a close-quarters scrap.
World Title Stakes in Tokyo
Goodman enters this interim title opportunity after two scheduled fights against Naoya Inoue were delayed due to cuts. Altamura expects that the winner of Sunday’s match may eventually be upgraded to full champion if Inoue pursues fights elsewhere and vacates the division.
“I believe that this contest, although it’s billed as the interim world championship, I believe it’s for the full world championship,” Altamura said.
Altamura notes that Goodman has avoided speaking to him during the final months of preparation, but the two have an agreement to resume their friendship immediately after the bout concludes on September 28.
