Kai Havertz Returns to Arsenal for Assessment Following Muscle Strain on International Duty

Arsenal forward Kai Havertz is returning to north London for medical evaluation after suffering a minor muscle strain during Germany’s 1-1 draw against the Netherlands in Amsterdam on Thursday. The 27-year-old pulled up following a first-half challenge from Quinten Timber and was substituted for Younes Ebnoutalib.

The injury rules Havertz out of Germany’s remaining fixtures in the international window. Germany manager Jürgen Klopp confirmed that both Havertz and Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala—who sustained a suspected thigh problem during the same match—are undergoing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Burkardt have been called up to replace the pair in the squad.

“Both are currently undergoing an MRI,” Klopp stated regarding the injuries. “I hope we get the diagnosis [on Thursday] evening. But of course, this isn’t great. I hope it’s nothing serious. The lads are probably out for us. But hopefully, they’ll be back in action relatively quickly.”

Arsenal’s Squad Impact and Recovery Timeline

Arsenal are optimistic that Havertz has avoided a major injury. The timing of the setback provides a recovery window of more than two weeks before the club resumes Premier League action at home against Leeds on Saturday, October 10.

However, the physical issue revives concerns regarding the forward’s recent fitness record. Havertz missed the final three months of the 2024–25 season due to a hamstring tear and was limited to just seven Premier League starts last campaign due to knee and muscle problems. In the current season, he has started six of Arsenal’s eight games across all competitions, scoring three goals.

Tactical Alternatives for Mikel Arteta

Manager Mikel Arteta faces immediate decisions regarding his forward line if Havertz remains unavailable for upcoming fixtures. Viktor Gyokeres served as the primary replacement in Havertz’s absence last season, netting 21 goals in all competitions. However, the Sweden international has experienced a quiet start to the current campaign, logging only 29 Premier League minutes across two starts against Napoli and Ipswich Town.

Sky Sports pundit Jay Bothroyd analyzed the tactical shift required if Gyokeres leads the line. “Gyokeres’s style is very different to Havertz,” Bothroyd noted. “He wants to run in behind more, he wants to play on the shoulder more and get down the channels between the centre-back and the full-back.”

Bothroyd added that Arteta might also consider deploying Mikel Merino in an advanced role. “Merino has a lot of the same attributes as Havertz in terms of being technically very good, holding the ball, having good vision and making good passes,” Bothroyd said. “I think Gyokeres will start, but if he’s not doing what he should be doing early on, I think Merino will be in there soon.”
