The survival thriller sequel Fall: 2 has officially arrived in Czech cinemas this Thursday, bringing its trademark fear of heights to a precarious new setting in the mountains of Thailand. Directed by Scott Mann, the franchise follows its 2022 predecessor, which trapped two friends on a rusted 610-meter radio tower in the middle of the California desert.
The Origins of a High-Altitude Thriller
Director Scott Mann originally conceived the high-stakes survival concept while filming the action movie Final Score starring Pierce Brosnan. The shoot took place on the roof of London’s Boleyn Ground football stadium just weeks before its demolition in late 2016. According to Mann in an interview with MovieWeb, looking down from the stadium roof sparked the idea that no filmmaker had properly tackled vertigo on screen, despite it being a universally shared fear.
Additional inspiration came from the Oscar-winning climbing documentary Free Solo and Tom Cruise scaling the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Mann initially planned for the script to center on a couple of social media influencers, but his wife persuaded him to shift the focus toward female friendship and coping with loss. The protagonist, Becky—played by Grace Caroline Currey—was developed to evoke Sarah Connor’s character evolution between The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, as noted in the film’s production notes.
Production Challenges and Special Effects
The original film’s production in the Mojave Desert faced harsh environmental hurdles, including extreme heat, snakes, strong winds, thunderstorms, and swarms of flying ants. The crew also utilized trained live vultures for specific aggressive scenes. Despite these obstacles, the film was completed on a modest budget.
When the film required dialogue changes to secure a wider theatrical rating without costly reshoots, Mann utilized artificial intelligence experts from his company, Flawless. The technology subtly altered the actors’ facial movements on screen to make modified words look and sound natural. The low-budget project turned into a commercial hit, grossing nearly 22 million dollars worldwide. Following the release of the sequel, the studio plans to produce a third installment, with Scott Mann returning to direct.
Global Engineering Marvels
The towering heights featured in cinema often mirror real-world engineering feats. The global collection of ultra-tall structures includes several record-breaking skyscrapers and towers:
- Burj Khalifa: Standing at 829.8 meters in Dubai, UAE, completed in 2010.
- Independence 118: Rising to 680.5 meters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, built in 2023.
- Petronius: Reaching 640 meters as a deepwater platform in the Gulf of Mexico, installed in 2000.
- Tokyo Skytree: Measuring 634 meters as a broadcasting tower in Tokyo, Japan, finished in 2012.
- Shanghai Tower: Soaring to 632 meters in Shanghai, China, constructed in 2015.
For the fictional tower in the original Fall, designers modeled the structure on the KXTV/KOVR tower near Sacramento, California, which stands at 624 meters. To capture the illusion of immense height safely, the production team built a 30-meter section of the tower atop a mountain, utilizing specific camera angles by cinematographer Miguel de Olaso to simulate the terrifying altitude.
