Manufacturing Update: Amazon, U.S. Steel, and Pirelli Expand Facilities

Major industrial and manufacturing firms are advancing capital projects, groundbreakings, and facility expansions across the United States and Europe, even as broader market pressures prompt selective workforce reductions in other segments.

Amazon Expands Robotics Manufacturing in Indiana and Texas

Amazon plans to invest more than $100 million in a new robotics manufacturing facility in Greenwood, Indiana, according to an e-commerce giant announcement on Thursday. The 585,000-square-foot factory will produce robots and equipment that power Amazon fulfillment centers across North America, with operations scheduled to begin by 2028. The facility will create 300 jobs and house advanced fabrication, robotic welding, automated powder coating, and assembly under one roof, supported by Amazon Web Services and artificial intelligence systems.

This expansion follows a multi-billion-dollar commitment made less than a month prior to construct a robotics manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas, which will create up to 500 jobs. To date, Amazon has manufactured more than 1 million robots at its Massachusetts facilities, deploying them across more than 300 global facilities to assist with customer order fulfillment.

Nippon Steel Directs Capital Toward European and U.S. Operations

Nippon Steel will invest 900 million euros, equivalent to $1.02 billion, to add an electric arc furnace and air separation unit to its U.S. Steel operations in Slovakia, the Japan-based steelmaker announced on Sept. 16. U.S. Steel Košice, a wholly-owned subsidiary under parent Nippon Steel, signed an agreement with the Slovak Government for up to 350 million euros in funding for the new equipment. The electric arc furnace will melt recycled scrap into steel, producing up to 1.6 million metric tons per year with operations starting in 2030, while the air separation unit is expected online in 2029. The announcement follows a corporate restructuring in which U.S. Steel Košice becomes a direct subsidiary effective Oct. 1, transitioning to the name Nippon Steel Slovakia.

Simultaneously, U.S. Steel broke ground on Monday for its $475 million quench and tempering facility in Fairfield, Alabama. The project adds capacity to the company’s tubular operations by introducing a two-stage heat-treatment process that improves steel strength and durability, alongside finishing lines, warehousing, and storage. Parent company Nippon Steel greenlit the project in June to improve competitiveness in the oil country tubular goods market. The investment is expected to create 250 jobs and support construction through 2029, building on a separate $75 million investment made last November for a premium threadline at the same location.

Eli Lilly Breaks Ground on $6.5 Billion Texas Facility

Eli Lilly broke ground on Monday on a $6.5 billion factory in Houston dedicated to producing active pharmaceutical ingredients, including orforglipron for the company’s first GLP-1 pill. The project forms part of a $50 billion reshoring push and is projected to create more than 600 local jobs. Company Chairman and CEO David Ricks stated in a release that the investment will change the game for tens of millions of people suffering from overweight, obesity, and related consequences such as diabetes. Representing Eli Lilly’s tenth U.S. manufacturing site announced since 2020, the company also plans to produce active pharmaceutical ingredients in Richmond, Virginia, Huntsville, Alabama, and two locations in Lebanon, Indiana. Eli Lilly committed $12.5 million to San Jacinto College to establish a training program and talent pipeline for advanced chemical synthesis manufacturing.

Pirelli Expands Georgia Manufacturing Footprint

Formula 1 tire supplier Pirelli will spend $1.2 billion to expand its manufacturing facility in Rome, Georgia, creating 1,000 jobs in the region, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp announced on Tuesday. The expansion proceeds in two phases, starting with the installation of Pirelli robotics equipment and followed by traditional manufacturing processes requiring a larger workforce. Governor Kemp noted that the investment will add roughly five times more positions to Pirelli’s existing 234-person local workforce.
