Morning Raves and Non-Alcoholic Beer: The Rise of ‘Sober Curious’ Culture in Korea

On a Sunday morning in October at the Cob House cafe in Sangsu-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, OB Brewery hosted an “Early Bird” daytime music session featuring the non-alcoholic beverage Budweiser Zero and live performances by acts like Racunerama. The event reflects a growing South Korean consumer trend toward reducing alcohol consumption, known as “sober curious,” as official data shows a decline in average monthly drinking days.

Morning Raves and Daytime Music Sessions in Seoul

At 10:00 AM on Sunday, October 20, participants gathered outside the Cob House cafe in Mapo-dong, Seoul, for an event organized by OB Brewery’s Budweiser brand. Unlike traditional nighttime music parties that require attendees to manage late-night curfews and last trains, this “Early Bird” session took place in the morning and afternoon. Attendees held non-alcoholic Budweiser Zero beverages while listening to live music from acts including Racunerama, Otis Lim, and a collaborative session featuring Samokyota and Lazykuma.

Participants interviewed at the venue expressed relief at avoiding the logistical burdens of evening nightlife. A mid-20s female attendee from Mapo-gu stated that the morning schedule allowed her to enjoy live performances without worrying about getting home late. A 30s male attendee from Yeongdeungpo-gu added that the format provided an energetic start to the day without the exhaustion of a late-night drinking session.

Shifting Spaces and Interactive Programs

The “Early Bird” format draws inspiration from international morning rave cultures that use music to start the day. OB Brewery expanded the event series from its initial morning-only slots in 2024 to daytime hours between May and September, utilizing non-traditional venues such as record shops, LP bars, barbershops, bakeries, and cafes. According to OB Brewery, all five rounds of the event series sold out on their opening application days.

In addition to live music, the final 5th round incorporated “bedazzling” stations where participants decorated their Budweiser Zero cans with sparkling stickers and decorative items to express personal tastes. Attendees also utilized an on-site Polaroid photo zone to capture moments from the morning event.

The Rise of the Sober Curious Movement and Non-Alcoholic Market Growth

This daytime event coincides with measurable shifts in South Korean drinking habits. Data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation’s (aT) “2025 Liquor Industry Information Status Survey” indicates that the average monthly drinking days for consumers who drink at least once a month dropped from 9.0 days in 2023 to 8.8 days in 2025. Average daily alcohol intake decreased slightly from 6.7 glasses to 6.6 glasses over the same period.

This reduction in frequency and volume supports the spread of the “sober curious” lifestyle, where consumers intentionally moderate alcohol intake while still participating in social gatherings. Market data from Euromonitor projects that South Korea’s non-alcoholic and zero-alcohol beer market will expand from 704억원 in 2024 to 946억원 by 2027.

OB Brewery has targeted this expanding sector through brands like Cass 0.0 and Cass Lemon Squeeze 0.0, capturing approximately 40% of sales value in the domestic home-market non-alcoholic segment during the first quarter of 2025, according to corporate figures.
