Dr. Idris Evans, a pediatric critical care physician and assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh, was stabbed to death in his home on Thursday. Police have charged 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway with homicide, burglary, and related offenses following the attack.

The fatal home invasion occurred just after 12:30 a.m. on Thursday at the victim’s residence in Allegheny County. Gina Evans, the victim’s wife, told law enforcement that her husband yelled the suspect’s first name during the confrontation as if he recognized him. The couple’s children, ages 8 and 12, fled to a neighbor’s house after their mother instructed them to run.
Police and emergency responders arrived at the scene, and the suspect was subsequently taken to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh, where he remained hospitalized on Friday. Gina Evans sustained severe stab wounds during the struggle, according to local authorities.
Prior Arrests and Legal History
Court records show that the suspect had accumulated 22 past criminal charges prior to the fatal attack. These included prior arrests for domestic incidents involving a girlfriend and a manic incident in April 2025 where he ran through a Daytona, Florida, parking lot proclaiming himself to be King Tutankhamun, according to body camera footage obtained by WPXI. In July, court records indicate he was arrested on burglary and theft charges stemming from a February home break-in, but was released on non-monetary bail just hours later.

Dr. Evans served as the co-Medical Director of the Pediatric Transport Team at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, in addition to his faculty role at the University of Pittsburgh.
