Dorothy explores gender, queer anxieties, and patriarchal violence

Set in a region historically associated with caste-based violence and hypermasculinity in Tamil cinema, the film tracks two boys, Karthi and Subbu, growing up surrounded by brittle egos and oppressive social structures. Subbu, played by Sananth, comes from a dominant caste and looks up to Bruce Lee, while Karthi, played by Rishikanth, belongs to an oppressed caste. The entry of Dorothy, a daughter-in-law in Subbu’s household played by Keerthy Suresh, shifts the dynamics of the story, subverting expectations built around typical gangster dramas set in the region.

TIFF Premiere and Production Background

Dorothy had its world premiere in the Centrepiece section at Toronto’s Scotiabank Theatre on September 12, 2026, marking the first Tamil feature to screen at TIFF in a decade. Director Karthik Subbaraj attended the premiere alongside cast members Keerthy Suresh, Sananth, and Rishikanth, alongside producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain. The film is produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Guneet Monga Kapoor, and Achin Jain in association with Dhammam Films.

Speaking about the project at the festival, Karthik Subbaraj stated that the film comes from a culture he knows intimately while exploring universal questions around friendship and prejudice. Jio Studios President Jyoti Deshpande noted that the project demonstrates how cinema crosses language barriers through universal human emotion. Producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain highlighted that the collaboration brings together different strengths with the shared belief that strong Indian stories can find audiences anywhere.

Cast Performances and Musical Score

The film features a central cast led by Sananth, Rishikanth, and Keerthy Suresh, with Muthukumar appearing as Subbu’s father, “Whistle” Veeraiya. Rishikanth builds on attention received from his lead debut in Modha Rathri and a minor role in Coolie, while Sananth expands a filmography that includes Demonte Colony, Jil Jung Juk, and Mahaan.

The original score and songs are composed by Ilaiyaraaja, marking his first collaboration with Subbaraj. The 18-track original soundtrack was showcased during a live musical experience in Chennai prior to the film’s theatrical release, featuring musicians performing the score continuously for approximately 40 minutes.

Thematic Exploration and Narrative Structure

Moving away from the glorification of violence often tied to Madurai-set narratives, the screenplay examines how patriarchy and incel culture fuel toxicity among young men. Dialogue throughout the film addresses the rigidity of gender roles and emotional suppression, contrasting dominant-caste pride with the agency given to characters whose worth is frequently challenged.

The theatrical release on September 25 follows Karthik Subbaraj’s previous directorial, Retro, which starred Suriya, Pooja Hegde, and Joju George and opened on May 1, 2025.
