Her husband, Mark Weaver, has publicly alleged that her GP surgery failed to properly investigate the underlying causes of her deteriorating condition over several months, during which time her legs leaked fluid and became infested with maggots.
Timeline of the Insect Bite and Medical Treatments
The sequence of events began in the summer of 2017 while Mandy and Mark Weaver were tidying their garden. Mandy noticed what appeared to be an insect bite on her leg. Within weeks, the wound began oozing fluid. A community nurse examined the site, diagnosed an infection, prescribed antibiotics, and applied a dressing.
While the initial treatment offered temporary relief, the symptoms returned a few months later, affecting both of Mandy’s legs. Mark Weaver stated that despite repeated visits to their local GP surgery, clinicians continually attributed the ongoing issue to infection or dust from Mandy’s work as a supermarket cleaner. By January 2018, the condition had worsened significantly. Mandy’s legs darkened, and fluid leaked so heavily that the couple placed puppy pads on the floor to catch it.
Escalating Pain and Immobility
As the months progressed, Mandy lost her mobility and grew heavily reliant on her family for daily support. By July 2018, Mark suggested taking his wife to an Accident and Emergency department due to the intensity of her suffering, but Mandy declined to avoid worrying others. Mark reported that she cried out constantly from the severe pain, shifting between her legs to find relief. At one stage during the infection cycle, the wounds deteriorated to the point where maggots developed and had to be removed.
Mandy eventually secured an appointment with a tissue viability nurse scheduled for October 2018. However, she was found dead at home just days before that appointment could take place.

A post-mortem examination and coroner’s report determined that Mandy Weaver died from a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) that triggered a fatal pulmonary embolism. If a blood clot breaks free and travels to the lungs, it becomes a pulmonary embolism, which is a medical emergency.
Mark Weaver maintains that the tragedy could have been prevented had medical staff conducted a thorough investigation into why the initial bite wound refused to heal and eventually spread to both limbs. The specific species of insect responsible for the initial 2017 bite remains unidentified.
