An online vehicle sale on AutoScout24 collapsed when a 41-year-old entrepreneur from the Bassa bresciana region accepted a fraudulent cashier’s check for his 62,000-euro Jeep Wrangler, according to the Carabinieri of Verolanuova. Authorities quickly traced the stolen SUV using an onboard satellite tracking system and recovered the vehicle in the Bergamo province.
Vehicle Sale Fraud Uncovered in Brescia
The transaction began through an online listing on the AutoScout24 platform. The 41-year-old seller agreed to part with his Jeep Wrangler, executing a formal ownership transfer as the buyer handed over a cashier’s check at the time of delivery. The scheme unraveled immediately when the victim deposited the instrument at his bank, where staff confirmed the check lacked proper backing and the linked account held insufficient funds.
Realizing he had been defrauded, the victim filed a formal complaint with the Carabinieri Company of Verolanuova.
Satellite Tracking Leads Carabinieri to Bergamo
The investigation broke open due to a factory-installed satellite tracking system connected to a smartphone application. The owner provided real-time location data to investigators, allowing the Radiomobile unit of Verolanuova to coordinate directly with counterparts in the Bergamo province.
A patrolling unit located the stolen Jeep Wrangler parked inside a residential area within the Bassa bergamasca. Officers seized the vehicle and transferred it to an authorized impound facility pending its formal return to the legal owner.
Suspect Identified and Charged
Following the recovery operation, the Carabinieri identified and charged a 49-year-old resident of the Milan province in connection with the crime. Investigators confirmed the suspect is already known to law enforcement and carries prior convictions for property crimes, noting his suspected involvement in similar vehicle scams.
The suspect faces formal charges of aggravated fraud.
