Defensive Strategy and Left-Back Priorities
The Catalan club currently manages a crowded roster on both defensive flanks. Eric Garcia, Jules Kounde, and Joao Cancelo cover the right side, while Alejandro Balde and Xavi Espart handle the left. Despite these options, Flick and the board anticipate future adjustments because maintaining regular playing time for every player proves nearly impossible.
Left-back remains the primary area of need. Balde experienced a difficult start to the campaign, prompting Barcelona to pursue reinforcements during the previous summer window. Previous targets included Alejandro Grimaldo, who ultimately signed with Atletico Madrid, and Juventus defender Andrea Cambiaso, though the high cost of the Italian player hindered negotiations.
Targeting Expiring Contracts in January
David Raum has emerged as a standout option for the Catalan management. The Germany international and Leipzig captain is currently running down his contract, placing him firmly on Barcelona’s radar. Flick’s prior experience in German football provides deep familiarity with Raum’s capabilities. Leipzig is actively working to retain the player and hopes to open contract renewal discussions.
Tyrick Mitchell represents another viable candidate on the club’s shortlist. The Crystal Palace and former England full-back is also approaching free agency as his current deal expires, giving Barcelona another financial-friendly option to evaluate.
Management does not plan to rush immediate moves. The club is carefully monitoring these targets ahead of the January window, keeping in mind that players with expiring contracts gain the right to negotiate and pre-sign agreements with rival clubs when the winter market opens.
Squad Clarity and Future Roster Decisions
Barcelona intends to establish internal clarity regarding its wide defenders before committing to any January transactions. An oversupply of players in specific defensive positions could encourage the club to listen to incoming transfer offers for existing squad members.
