The Indianapolis Colts secured their first win of the season by defeating the Houston Texans 19-17, snapping a skid that had left the franchise without a victory in 321 days. Entering the matchup, the Indianapolis defense ranked last in the league in yards and points allowed, having surrendered 1,209 yards and 74 points across their first two games.

Defensive Turnaround Against the Houston Texans

In Sunday’s contest, the Indianapolis defense limited the Houston offense to 223 total yards. The unit improved its pass rush by collecting three sacks against Texans quarterback CJ Stroud, nearly matching their total of four sacks from the first two weeks combined. Veteran defensive tackle DeForest Buckner led the effort with 1.5 sacks. Pro Football Focus credited the defense with only four missed tackles while forcing four three-and-outs.

“We knew coming into the week that we had to play better, and it started at practice Wednesday,” cornerback Justin Walley said. “We honed it on detail. I think it’s our best we practiced the whole year, and we did the small things right.”

Addressing Communication and Execution Gaps

Head coach Shane Steichen and defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo spent the week emphasizing better communication and tackling following back-to-back defensive struggles. Players acknowledged the strategic shift during post-game media availability.

“Executing a lot of plays, communication and tackling was a little bit better today,” Buckner said. “Obviously, we still have room to grow in that area, but overall it was definitely a better effort.”

Walley noted that increased reps on the field contribute to positional comfort. “The only thing that gets you more confident is more games and more reps,” Walley said. “The more I feel like we’re out there, the more comfort we’re getting in our positions, the more we can focus on the small things.”

Looking Ahead to the Next Matchup

With the 0-2 start averted and the first victory of the campaign secured, Buckner emphasized the need for consistent preparation moving forward.

“We just have to continue to stack these wins,” Buckner said. “Next week needs to be the same. We need to continue to get better (with) the sense of urgency and attention to detail.”
