Madonna opened the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on September 27, 2026, marking her first live performance at the ceremony in 23 years. Performing alongside collaborator Sabrina Carpenter at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, the pop icon delivered a high-energy rendition of her 2026 single “Bring Your Love,” broadcast live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.

Madonna Returns to the VMA Stage After Two Decades

The 2026 ceremony started with Madonna’s opening number, which brought dancers and guest appearances from actor Debi Mazar, Sombr, and Julia Garner onto the stage.

Host Snoop Dogg introduced the next segment of the night, praising the opener. “Now that is an icon,” Snoop Dogg said during the live broadcast, before adding a joke about her history with the network. Teyana Taylor then presented the first competitive award of the night, best pop, to LISA for “Dream” featuring Kentaro Sakaguchi.

Taylor Swift Set to Make History With Artist Director Honors

Taylor Swift enters the evening tied with Beyoncé as the most-awarded musician in VMA history, with 30 wins each. During the ceremony, Swift is slated to receive the inaugural Artist Director Honors, a new category established to recognize creators whose behind-the-camera work expands visual storytelling in music videos. The award will bring her career total to 31 wins.

Swift will also debut the self-directed music video for her new song, “Patient Zero,” starring Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson. The release marks Swift’s first single since her July marriage to Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden.

Nomination Totals and Leading Artists

Madonna leads all contenders at the 2026 VMAs with 11 nominations across categories including video, artist, and song of the year, alongside nods for best collaboration, dance, direction, art direction, cinematography, editing, choreography, and visual effects. Her latest studio album, Confessions II, serves as the anchor for several nominations, including Video of the Year for Confessions II – The Film.

Taylor Swift follows with nine nominations. Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter each earned seven nods, while Bruno Mars, PinkPantheress, and Zara Larsson secured five nominations apiece. LISA received four nods, and Shakira, Tate McRae, GENER8ION, and Yung Lean are tied with three nominations each.

Tributes and Additional Performances

Beyond the opening number, the production features multiple musical tributes honoring late industry figures. Kacey Musgraves pays homage to country music icon Dolly Parton, who died in Nashville in August at age 80. Separately, Raye, Sombr, and Teddy Swims honor George Michael, marking a decade since his death on Christmas Day in 2016 at age 53. Raye also performs a solo set.

Additional musical acts scheduled for the evening include GENER8ION with Yung Lean, Shaboozey with Gunna, LISA, and Sienna Spiro. Presenters announced for the broadcast include Alex Warren, Belmont Cameli, Charli xcx, Ciara Miller, David Corenswet, Ella Bright, Isabel May, Jeff Probst, Rachel Dratch, Tyla, and Troye Sivan.
