Riau’s Disaster Mitigation Agency reported zero active forest and land fires across the Indonesian province on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026. Joint firefighting teams successfully brought previous blazes under control following weeks of intensive efforts.
Indonesia’s Riau Disaster Mitigation Agency Chief Edy Afrizal confirmed that the fires were under control. Speaking in Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau Province, on Sunday, Edy stated: Thankfully, Riau has zero forest and land fires today. There are no active fires we are handling.
Ongoing Monitoring and Cooling Operations
Despite having no active fires, authorities remain on alert for potential flare-ups because conditions on the ground can change at any time. Edy noted that the improving situation reflects the hard work of personnel operating in the field.
To prevent previously burned areas from reigniting, firefighting, cooling operations, and patrols are continuing across the province.
Police Maintain Prevention and Public Outreach
Riau Police Public Relations Head Senior Commissioner Akmadi stated that the zero-fire status would not cause prevention efforts to ease. Patrols and monitoring are persisting, with a particular focus on fire-prone and peatland areas.

Akmadi said, adding: We must not let our vigilance decline once the situation is under control, because fires could break out again.
The Riau Police are maintaining preventive measures through public outreach and the monitoring of activities that could trigger fires. Residents have received reminders not to clear or prepare land by burning, and they are urged to immediately report any signs of fire.
Akmadi emphasized that collaboration among local governments, the military and police, the disaster agency, Manggala Agni, businesses, and communities remains the key to preventing fires from recurring.
