Jason Beem returns from vacation and visits off-track betting site

Beem noted that taking breaks from the sport is beneficial due to its year-round nature and the intense love and passion people have for it, which can sometimes lead to getting caught up in social media, discussions on improving the game, or frustrating leadership decisions.

An Afternoon at the Off-Track Betting Site

On Saturday, Beem spent time on the fifth-floor off-track betting area at Emerald Downs, calling the experience a blast. He described going back and forth with other guys about horses or interesting races, and talking about life between races. Observing the atmosphere, he noted that the crowd skews toward senior citizens, similar to most off-track betting areas. About an hour before Santa Anita was set to start, he observed that the venue was about half full and noticeably quieter than a decade prior, when it would have been packed. While a friend mentioned that a few regulars had passed away since Beem’s last visit, other regulars might simply not have come out.

The Shift Toward Solitary Betting

Reflecting on the experience, Beem pointed out that betting and watching races has become a much more solitary activity for many people—including himself—due to the ease of betting from phones or computers. When announcing races, he works alone in a booth without camaraderie regarding the races. However, spending Saturday talking with others helped him reconnect with the real reasons he loves horse racing: the game, the people who play it, and the community of horseplayers.

Return to Work and Upcoming Schedule

With his vacation concluded, Beem is back to writing his column on Mondays and Thursdays. New episodes of his podcast also started, featuring scheduled guests ahead of Keeneland kicking off on Friday.
