Production on the upcoming Universal Pictures sequel is currently taking place in the United Kingdom, bringing original stars back together on set. Images of Weisz in full costume have surfaced online, marking her first appearance in the franchise since 2001’s The Mummy Returns. Following her departure after the second film, the character of Evelyn was recast, with Maria Bello taking over the role in the 2008 installment The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. The upcoming fourth film reportedly ignores the events of that third entry.
Directing the sequel are Radio Silence filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known for their work on Scream and Ready or Not. The script was penned by David Coggeshall.
Franchise Cast Reunites Alongside Brendan Fraser
Brendan Fraser returns as Rick O’Connell, reuniting on screen with Weisz. Fraser addressed his physical preparation for the demanding role during an appearance on The Tonight Show, noting that he has been working to get back into shape for the production. “I’m doing my best to get this 57-year-old gear in shape,” Fraser stated. “We’re going to give the audience what they have been bothering all of us for the last 20-whatever years. What we’re going to do is saddle back up, go back to the locations.”
Alongside the main leads, several other notable cast members from the earlier films are confirmed to return. John Hannah reprises his role as Evelyn’s older brother, Jonathan Carnahan. Arnold Vosloo returns as the villainous Imhotep, the undead High Priest of Osiris from the original films, and Oded Fehr comes back as the Medjai warrior chieftain Ardeth Bay. The ensemble cast also adds new additions Michael Johnston and Numan Acar. John Hannah confirmed the returning roster at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival, telling attendees, “You’ve heard all the rumors and it’s true. Everyone’s back.”
