Madonna claimed Sabrina Carpenter and her management team delayed responding to a collaboration request for five days before she intervened directly through social media. The 68-year-old singer detailed the exchange during her acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, where her duet with Carpenter, “Bring Your Love,” won Best Collaboration.

Madonna told the audience that she reached out to Carpenter directly after experiencing a multi-day silence from the younger artist. “Everybody who knows me knows how impatient I am,” Madonna said during her speech. “And when five days passed, and I still didn’t get connected with Sabrina and didn’t hear back from her about whether she wanted to do a song with me, five days, I DM’d her.”
According to Madonna, Carpenter answered the direct message. Within weeks, the pair entered the recording studio together. The resulting track, “Bring Your Love,” has since accumulated over 66 million streams on Spotify.
The collaboration formed part of a major night for Madonna at the VMAs, where she opened the ceremony for the first time in 23 years with performances of “Bring Your Love” and “Danceteria.” Her latest project, Confessions 2, won Artist of the Year and Best Album, triumphing over competing releases from Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, Morgan Wallen, Olivia Dean, Olivia Rodrigo, and Drake. Madonna also secured awards for Best Choreography, Best Long Form Video, and Best Cinematography.
Taylor Swift Makes VMA History and Dedicates Award to Dolly Parton
Taylor Swift achieved a historic milestone at the Sunday ceremony by becoming the most-awarded artist in MTV VMA history, accumulating 33 career wins. Prior to the event, Swift shared the record with Beyoncé at 30 awards each.
Accepting the Best Video award for “The Fate of Ophelia,” Swift dedicated the win to the late Dolly Parton. Swift described Parton as “the ultimate showgirl” who crafted vivid and rich stories. “I think that we were all very lucky to share this planet with Dolly Parton for a time,” Swift stated.
Swift also received the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, recognizing her work writing and directing 18 music videos throughout her career. VMA executive producer Bruce Gillmer noted ahead of the event that the new award originated from external influence.
