Indonesia Stock Exchange Launches Short Selling for Five Major Stocks

The Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) has officially authorized short selling for five stocks starting October 1, 2026. The move, announced by IDX President Director Jeffrey Hendrik during a September 28, 2026, doorstop, includes PT Astra International Tbk (ASII), PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BBCA), PT Barito Pacific Tbk (BRPT), PT Bumi Resources Tbk (BUMI), and PT Indofood Sukses Makmur Tbk (INDF), according to EmitenNews.com.

Key Details of the Short Selling Announcement

Hendrik stated, “We will announce the short selling shares after the market closes today. There are five (shares),” as reported by EmitenNews.com. The regulatory body confirmed that short selling will commence on October 1, 2026, following the reactivation of short selling transactions on September 15, 2026.

Short selling is restricted to two designated brokers: Semesta Indovest Sekuritas and Ajaib Sekuritas, per kontan.co.id. These firms will facilitate transactions for investors meeting specific criteria, including a minimum initial capital of Rp 50 million and a six-month history of holding a regular trading account.

Investor Requirements and Brokerage Restrictions

BEI emphasized that short selling is intended for “investor yang sudah berpengalaman” to mitigate risks, as highlighted by Hendrik in kontan.co.id. The requirement for a Rp 50 million minimum deposit and a six-month account tenure aims to ensure participants have sufficient market knowledge and financial stability.

“Therefore, it is certainly hoped that experienced investors will use short selling as part of their investment strategy,” Hendrik said. The regulation also references POJK No. 6 of 2024, which governs short selling in Indonesia.

Market Implications and Next Steps

BEI confirmed that investor onboarding for short selling is ongoing.
