The Gloucestershire base belongs to the UK’s RAF but is utilized by the US Air Force for defensive strikes on Iran. Taylor acknowledged significant public interest regarding whether the current geopolitical context influenced the plot, stating that investigators are considering every angle, including activity committed by individuals knowingly or unknowingly working on behalf of a foreign state.
The Iranian embassy in London categorically rejected and strongly condemned any speculation tying Tehran to a plan to target the airbase. This development follows warnings from MI5 director Ken McCallum, who reported in October that security services had tracked more than 20 Iran-backed plots in the UK over the preceding year.
Farmer’s Vigilance Triggers Police Intervention
The arrests originated from a local farmer’s observation early Sunday morning. Driving home from a party, the witness encountered three vans blocking a road and observed a large group of hooded and masked men fleeing when spotted. After initial difficulties reaching the police at the ministry of defence, she dialed 999 to alert regular forces. She expressed shock at the lack of visible perimeter patrols around the base.
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting told Sky News on Monday morning that while the farmer acted quickly and thoughtfully, she possessed only a partial picture of the situation. US President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that authorities had the suspects under view for a long time prior to the arrests, praising the cooperative response between US and British teams.

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced plans to chair a Cobra meeting on Monday to address the matter.
