A massive industrial fire tore through a recycling facility on the Siebengaweg in Heerenveen on Monday evening, triggering a sprawling regional emergency response. The blaze engulfed a site that collects and processes used frying oils and fats, leaving the structure severely damaged and at risk of total collapse. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Escalating a ‘Very Large Fire’ in Heerenveen
The fire spread rapidly through the volatile materials stored inside the warehouse, forcing emergency services to immediately escalate the incident to a “very large fire” (zeer grote brand).
Four tank pumpers rushed to the scene from Heerenveen, Nieuwehorne, Tjalleberd, and Wolvega, alongside two aerial ladder trucks dispatched from Heerenveen and Drachten.
Massive Water and Foam Deployments
Combatting the high-intensity flames required a carefully coordinated logistical effort. Three large-scale water transport units were deployed from Joure, Gorredijk, and Burgum to maintain a steady water supply, while a specialized unit from Grou brought in crucial foam-extinguishing equipment.
A drone team provided vital aerial surveillance throughout the incident. This bird’s-eye view allowed the fire department to pinpoint specific hotspots and manage their tactical response with precision.
Structural Instability and Controlled Demolition
Crews faced severe operational hurdles due to the precarious state of the building. The presence of stored frying fats created volatile conditions, and the warehouse hovered on the brink of collapse all evening.
Once the primary blaze was contained, the strategy shifted. A crane was brought in to systematically remove sections of the building, allowing firefighters to safely tackle remaining hotspots from a distance. By late Monday night, operations began to wind down as two crews and a water transport unit headed back to their stations, though other units stayed behind to finish the job.
Dense Smoke and Onlooker Obstruction
The fire threw up thick, black plumes of smoke that drifted heavily over nearby fields. Although wind conditions ultimately favored the response, authorities urged residents in the immediate area to stay clear of the smoke, keep their doors and windows shut, and switch off ventilation systems.
Meanwhile, police had to contend with large crowds of onlookers who gathered near the industrial site. The gathering spectators created serious obstructions for incoming emergency vehicles, requiring officers to force bystanders back to maintain a clear perimeter.
Simultaneous Four-Car Pileup on the A32
As the region’s emergency infrastructure was stretched thin by the blaze, a separate crisis unfolded nearby. At approximately 2:30 p.m. on Monday, a four-car pileup occurred on the A32 motorway near Wolvega.
The collision caused significant damage to the vehicles involved and left one person injured, who was subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment. Authorities confirmed there was no link between the traffic crash and the recycling plant fire on the Siebengaweg.
