The Spanish Navy frigates Navarra (F-85) and Cristóbal Colón (F-105) have launched a joint deployment into the eastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea to conduct surveillance, defense diplomacy, and allied training operations. Led by Captain Rafael Mira Calvo, Commander of the 41st Escort Squadron aboard the Navarra, the month-long mission is designed to integrate Spanish assets with NATO forces and safeguard national maritime interests.
Operational Integration with NATO and Allied Navies
During their transit through the Mediterranean, the two Spanish warships are joining the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG-2) alongside naval forces from Italy and Greece. According to the Spanish Navy, the deployment includes high-intensity training during the upcoming exercise Neptune Strike 26.4 (NEST 26.4), which tests combined operational readiness in complex naval scenarios. The joint missions aim to enhance tactical interoperability and maintain freedom of navigation across critical maritime corridors.
The deployment focuses heavily on security operations across the Strait of Gibraltar, the Gulf of Cádiz, and the Alborán Sea. In these waters, the vessels are executing presence and deterrence tasks linked to Operation Sea Guardian, a NATO maritime security operation dedicated to maritime situational awareness and counter-terrorism.
Support for Domestic Defense Industry and Port Diplomacy
Beyond tactical exercises, the deployment serves as a platform for defense diplomacy and industrial promotion. The itinerary features scheduled port visits to Naples, Italy, and Split, Croatia, designed to strengthen bilateral relations with allied nations.
The deployment provides advanced training for escort crews operating in diverse geopolitical and operational environments.
