How to Use Instagram’s New AI Pixel Feature to Blur Faces in Stories

Instagram is rolling out an artificial intelligence-powered feature called Pixel that allows users to instantly obscure faces or specific objects in Stories through text prompts, according to reports published in September 2026. The tool eliminates the need for manual stickers, emojis, or drawing tools by letting the platform’s underlying technology interpret commands and apply pixelation automatically.

How Instagram Pixel Works in Stories

The Pixel effect is accessible directly within the effects menu when building a Story on the platform. After uploading a photo and selecting the effect, users type a prompt specifying what they want to hide. Instructions can range from directing the system to pixelate a person on a specific side of the frame to obscuring individuals standing in the background.

Once the prompt is processed, users can fine-tune the level of obscurity using an adjustable slider. This control allows the subject to be blurred entirely or kept partially visible depending on the desired effect. Meta developed the feature to automate image editing tasks within its applications, expanding on a rollout of more than 30 AI-driven effects introduced earlier in July 2026.

Instagram formally acknowledged one of the primary social media use cases for the tool, stating in official materials, ” sedang memberi petunjuk hubungan? Kami bantu” as the feature began reaching accounts. The capability aligns with the “soft launch” trend, where users hint at relationships on social platforms by featuring a partner without immediately revealing their identity.

Broader Privacy and Creative Uses

Beyond relationship announcements, the Pixel tool serves practical privacy functions for everyday sharing. Users can deploy the AI effect to protect the identities of children, remove strangers who accidentally appear in the background of a shot, or conceal specific objects before publishing content to followers.

Unlike traditional manual edits that rely on static overlays, the Meta-developed system analyzes the visual content, recognizes the requested subject, and applies the transformation dynamically. Because the rollout is happening gradually, features may not appear simultaneously on all accounts. Users who cannot locate the option in their effect menus are advised to update their applications to the latest version or wait for the update to reach their profile.

Rollout Status and Availability

Meta is distributing the Pixel feature in phases across international markets, including Indonesia, without providing a definitive geographic rollout schedule. Technical availability depends entirely on the phased deployment managed by the parent company. As the platform integrates more generative imaging tools like Muse Image—introduced by Meta earlier in 2026—editing workflows inside Stories continue to shift toward natural language prompts rather than manual manipulation.
