The author also voiced unhappiness when Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey received an R-rating, noting an inability to rationalize taking 11- and 9-year-old children to see it. While acknowledging that R-rated films were marketed to children in the 1980s and 1990s—noting a personal childhood experience of being taken to Terminator 2: Judgment Day at age 8—purchasing one adult and one child ticket for an R-rated movie remains a barrier.

Godzilla has a history spanning over 70 years encompassing multifaceted eras, from tamer Showa era movies where the character was goofy, to versions introduced by prior viewings like Jaws. Across more than seven decades, none of the films previously crossed into extreme territory requiring an R-rating.

Intrigue Ahead of the November 2026 Release Date

Despite the annoyance regarding the restricted rating, the project brings substantial intrigue. Toho is giving director Takashi Yamazaki immense trust with their poster boy by allowing an R-rated entry. Questions remain over what content in the film—such as potential extreme violence or bloody dead bodies—warranted the rating, and whether the sequel will feel like it is doing too much.

The movie is scheduled to release on the 2026 movie schedule on November 6th. The author plans to attend on day one without their son, leaving open the possibility of a second viewing if the final product is not deemed too grisly.
