A Reality Star’s Transparent Recovery

Melissa Gorga, a 47-year-old personality from Bravo’s The Real Housewives of New Jersey, shared a detailed look at her six-month post-treatment recovery. She underwent a combination of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and exosome therapy to address hair thinning along her hairline. The mother of three documented the procedure on Instagram.

Targeting the Hairline With Dr. Jeffrey Wise

Gorga turned to Dr. Jeffrey Wise, a facial plastic and hair restoration surgeon based in Wayne, New Jersey. She noticed mild to moderate thinning around the hairline. Wise noted that Gorga did not have severe enough hair loss to warrant a hair transplant, which he reserves for patients with extensive thinning or bald areas. Instead, the reality star opted for a two-pronged approach involving PRP and exosome injections.

Inside the PRP and Exosome Procedure

The PRP procedure begins by drawing a patient’s own blood and placing it into a centrifuge to separate red blood cells from the concentrated platelet-rich plasma. That concentrated plasma is then injected directly into targeted areas of the scalp. Gorga also received exosome injections. Wise described these as biological “delivery drivers” that transport signals between cells to help stimulate inactive follicles and encourage thicker growth when paired with PRP.

Dermatological Insights and Treatment Timelines

Cleveland Clinic dermatologist Dr. Shilpi Khetarpal explained that PRP treatments tend to yield the best outcomes when hair loss is relatively recent. She noted that follicles dormant for longer periods are more difficult to stimulate. Hair restoration through these methods does not happen overnight. According to Wise, patients typically observe gradual changes over several weeks as stimulated follicles produce thicker strands. Final results usually peak between six months and a year.

Traction Alopecia and the Road to Recovery

The American Academy of Dermatology warns that frequent tension from tight ponytails and hair extensions can lead to traction alopecia along the hairline. Gorga previously acknowledged on her On Display podcast that years of wearing extensions required her to give her natural hair a break. Six months following her March procedures, Gorga posted an update showing a fuller hairline while wearing her hair pulled back in a ponytail.
